PROLOGUE
Taryn’s Plants
Tomsu, a mercenary, starts their journey on planet Taryn. Hired by the residents, Tomsu is tasked to fight against the evil dictator controlling the planet.
This dictator is named Taryn and is the reason the planet’s name suddenly changed. Taryn had taken control of the planet by abusing a cloning machine that was supposed to be used only for food purposes. Having cloned themselves over and over again, they gained sufficient manpower to overtake the entire planet and enforce a dictatorship.
Taryn’s goal? To restore the native plant species. This may seem like a noble goal but it’s much more complicated than that. Indeed, Taryn’s native plants are omnivorous and devour anything in their path. They commonly eat people and are incredibly invasive.
The biggest problem they caused however was their destruction of agricultural plants. Taryn’s native plant species would eat the vegetables grown by the inhabitants causing famines and poverty everywhere they went. There were many wars waged against these plants and eventually the people won. The plants were obliterated and the only ones left were in captivity.
Taryn thought this was horrible. They had lived before with the plants and they only became an issue when Taryn’s population turned to agriculture of new imported vegetables rather than surviving with their own planetary resources. Taryn believes the issue with their planet is not the native plants but the newfound idea that these new exotic vegetables are worth the destruction of their home land.
Taryn used to be a planet covered in foliage and plants. Now, it is barren apart from the huge monocultures created by outsiders.
Beginning of a Resistance
The inhabitants were angry at the strict rules Taryn placed upon them, especially the ones concerning the native plants.
They organized among themselves and formed a resistance. However, Taryn had full control over the planet’s resources and more specifically, their vegetables.Without the vegetables, the people could not eat, nor could they fight back. Thankfully for them, a farmer had an illegal plant business in his basement. The rebels used this to grow themselves food and weapons. It was still not enough. In the end, they decided to hire mercenaries. As a last resort, they went to Tomsu. A famous mercenary known for never losing any battle. But that was not the only thing Tomsu was known for…
Taryn’s Political System
To understand Taryn’s take over, one must understand how their political system works. For the people of Taryn, the most powerful force in the universe is luck. As such, their entire system is based off of chance. Taryn’s power is divided in four parts. Legislative, judiciary, executive and the media. The legislative council is made up of 50 people. These people change every 5 years. They are composed of citizens who are above 5 years of age. They are chosen randomly from a pool and the people chosen can vote in laws.
When one is chosen by chance, one cannot refuse to govern, one must participate in governmental activities.
For judiciary, they used to flip a coin to determine if one was guilty or not and then spin a wheel to determine the punishment, however, after Taryn became a part of the UU (United Universe) their system changed. They created a court system with attorneys, judges and other jobs parents would be proud of. They were very fond of the concept of a jury however and decided they would be randomly selected from the population. Instead of just luck, now it’s luck and logic.
When it came to the executive power, everyone had it. It was up to the citizens to enforce the laws voted in by the legislative council. Not the best system but it worked well enough for them.
Taryn’s people love to chat and so news would travel fast. Gossip and rumors heavily influence decisions made in all three previous branches. Better not get on anyone’s bad side or they might vote in a law exiling you from the planet.
Taryn’s clones rigged the selection of the legislative council, making it so Taryn was the only person chosen to govern.
